The effects Lymphedema are not just aesthetics. Limitations can include weakness, decrease in range of motion, pain, changes in sensation, and functional deficits.
At Physical Rehab Center of Hemet we have therapists specially trained in Comprehensive Decongestive Physical Therapy.
This is a two phase program with an emphasis on patient education.
Phase 1 consists of a specialized massage technique to open lymphatics and increase flow, followed by medical compression bandaging. Phase 1 is 5 times a week.
Phase 2 consists of all the components of phase 1 with addition of exercises to increase lymph flow. Most emphasis in this phase is on patient education to become independent in self care. Phase 2 is 3 times a week.
Compression pumps or Jobst pumps are no longer used. Most research points to these having adverse affects and possibly damaging initial lymphatics.

Aquatic Therapy
Our 20ft x 50ft Indoor Pool and state-of-the-art Aquatic Center provides therapeutic exercise programs to reduce the forces on the joints, provide resistance to the moving extremities, challenge balance, provide excellent endurance training and allow the reproduction of work patterns. All exercises are done in the water with the patient in a vertical position.

A person in water experiences up to 90% reduction in gravitational forces, making it possible to do exercises that may be too difficult to do on land. Our Electronic Lift Chair makes the pool handicapped-accessible.
UNIQUE PROPERTIES OF WATER
Buoyancy
- Opposes the force of gravity, allowing the body to move more freely and easily than on land.
- Decreases compressive forces on weigh-bearing joints and spinal discs.
- Assists joint range of motion.
Hydrostatic Pressure
- Promotes circulation and reduces edema.
- Stabilizing muscles are constantly at work.
Viscosity
- Provides three-dimensional resistance to promote muscle strength.
The water supports your weight and therefore reduces impact on you body. The results are strengthened and toned muscles without increased stress to joints.

Swedish / American Massage: A traditional relaxing Swedish Massage that improves circulation and muscle tome as well as decreases stress and tension.
Neck / Shoulder and Back: Acupressure with deep static pressure techniques are used.
Pregnancy Massage: A relaxing & soothing circulatory massage for the mother-to-be.
Hot Stone Massage: Stone Massage involves the application of water-based basalt stones of varying sizes to key points on the body, giving a deep massage and creating sensations of comfort & warmth.
